Insert Catchy Title Here

I used to open these things with a catchy song or something thereof, but you know, I just couldn't think of anything to say, so here I am... offering you an awkward explanation of why I don't have a song.

Anyway, remember that time that I started a blog and hardly updated it? I know, I'm terrible! But, I suppose in all fairness, I was on break for FOREVER, which warranted no new posts and then I got super busy and now, well here I am, in the midst of my busy life, updating this blog so all of you lovely people can read up on my SUPER AWESOME life. (Jokes, totally joking) But really, let's get the ball rolling, eh?

So, where should I start? Well, I haven't updated in about 3 months, so I have a lot of ground to cover.

Brief overview of what happened in the life of Karli from November 6th until winter break (so, if you are already informed on what went down in my life in that span of time, no need to bore yourself): (ALSO, I typed a LONG thing about the fun stuff I did in November and it all got deleted and I am now so frustrated that I do NOT want to explain anything, so I will just list the things I did with the date... -_______-)

November 12th- I went to the Quidditch World Cup! I was geeking out on Harry Potter ALL day and it was seriously the greatest thing ever.
Floormate/Friend Megan and me at the World Cup
November 17th-20th- I had a three day film shoot that I worked on in New Jersey! I got to do hair and makeup! I learned so much and had such a great time doing it, as well as got to meet some REALLY great people! Here's the link to the teaser trailer if you want to check it out: http://vimeo.com/32613391
Jules, one of the four main actors on the film. He was SO adorable!
November 24th- Thanksgiving. Since I was here over the Thanksgiving holiday, I had to improvise, as I was not used to being without my family on a holiday! Luckily, though, I have some family in the area that I had never really met/got to know, and they were glad to have me! So, my cousin Nicole brought me down to South Jersey to spend Thanksgiving with her family, who I very much enjoyed! It was almost like being home again, because they remind me so much of Auntie Linda and Nonnie. (; It was really great spending time with family, even if it wasn't the exact family that I am used to spending holidays with.
Me at Anthony and Amy's house on Thanksgiving
November 27th- I went to a concert at Webster Hall a couple of blocks away. It was really loud and small. Lots of stage diving and it was pretty hectic. My hearing was not quite the same after that, but I had a BLAST.

November 28th- I got to see THE DAILY SHOW with JON STEWART. It was absolutely GREAT. I had such a good time and it was so much fun getting to go and experience another type of live audience television studio and see the camera work and the set up and everything. And of course, Jon was just super fantastic and hilarious as always!

November 29th- Finally, after over 8 years of waiting, I got to see SIMPLE PLAN LIVE at the Best Buy theatre in Times Square. It was SUPER crazy. I cannot even talk about how many crowd surfers there were pummeling me and my precious neck. But fear not, I am FINE and it was definitely an experience to remember. Bumps and bruises were to be gained, but hey, that's the experience!

November 30th-December 16th- Those last 2 weeks in New York were extremely busy and crazy and altogether just a mess of djfska;kljasofiendasiovnawefp'jawe9gf. I spent it basically scouting locations for my final shoot, putting together my final project, writing final essays, and taking a final test, too. After that, I was just glad to be home and to be away from everything that encompassed the stressfulness of my life.
The BEAUTIFUL St. Michael's Cemetery in Queens that I used for a shoot
Me and the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center

And then, I got a break. (: For over one month, I was home with my family, in my hometown, and I got a chance to remember what it felt like to not be busy. And let me tell you, it was great while it lasted, but after a little while, I was itching to get back to the city! Don't get me wrong, I LOVED spending time with my parents. I missed them so much (and I constantly miss them) and it was wonderful to finally see them again and spend time with them, even if we weren't doing a lot. And of course I ADORED spending time with my nephew, Anthony. He is easily one of the most adorable creatures on the face of this earth! I really enjoyed seeing Nonnie, too. No matter how frustrated she makes me sometimes, I know it is all out of love and worry. And I love her for that. And I suppose I cannot forget my brothers and friends, either. Really, everyone that I got to see while I was in Mesquite made me so happy. But there was a hole that Mesquite just couldn't fill. After living in the city for four months, I realized that as much as I will always love Mesquite, I belong in the big city. Just like a plant needs to be repotted or a fish needs a larger bowl to grow, I need the city in order to thrive. In order to become what I know I am talented and strong enough to become, I must be transferred into my larger fish bowl.

Now that I am back in my larger bowl, I am getting back into the swing of busy life. Sure, I always say that I wish I had some "me" time or some time where I didn't have anything that I have to do or should be doing. But really, I am not happy if I am not continually busy. Which, I guess is a good thing, considering I'm in film school, which pretty much keeps me busy 24/7.

Classes are going well and I'm really enjoying my heavy schedule this semester. I'm taking:
Sound Image
Performance Strategies
Storytelling Strategies
Intro to Psychology
Writing the Essay: The World Through Art

It is a busy schedule, but as I just told you, I'm happy with it! No complaints so far. And the professors give me a laugh occasionally.

A funny little equation they offered when reminding us to be careful with our equipment. It made me giggle.
Crackhead + Crowbar x 30 seconds = Theft
Anyway, aside from classes, I've just been trying to do as many things as I can and have as much fun as possible!

Me at Dylan's Candy Bar uptown
I redecorated my wall above my bed. The elephant collage!
This is me, pretending to be a hipster. Sometimes the free time I have is spent uselessly.
And of course, I wouldn't be Karli if I didn't fall and hurt myself at least once. My first NEW YORK BATTLEWOUND. This is my knee, if you can't tell.
Okay, so let's move on. Remember how in my last post, I discussed that little thing called Saturday Night Live? Well, funny thing... I decided to go again! So, back story! I heard that Zooey Deschanel was going to be hosting SNL.
For those of you who don't know who Zooey is. This is my favorite thing ever!
Naturally, I had a spazz attack and immediately decided I was going to go. Thus, this last Friday afternoon, evening, night, and Saturday morning I found myself on the street, sitting outside of NBC Studios, waiting for 7am when they would hand out the tickets. The line was not as long as it was when I went for Charlie Day, which surprised me. That is, until it rained. And then I realized that I was in a small majority of people who love Zooey Deschanel enough to stay outside in the rain (although the rain was not that bad and didn't last that long) and cold in order to see her live on SNL.
SNL gave us soup, though! So that was nice. (:

Finally, the night passed and I was able to get ticket number 29 for the live taping.

 Of course my nerves were bundled up because it's ZOOEY and I didn't know if ticket 29 was enough to get me in to see her live. Well, guess what... it was! (As I'm sure those of you who have talked to my mom or have been on my facebook already knew) So, you know, I got in, which was awesome. It was a really fantastic show! If you didn't watch it, go watch it because they were all really on that night and it definitely showed. Also, if you do happen to watch it, pause it when Zooey is doing her opening monologue. You know when the camera faces the audience for like .2 seconds? Yeah, you can see me. Well, you probably won't know which one is me, but I'm there. I PROMISE. (;

After the fantastic show, which I can still not get over, I decided, "Hey, I should wait and try to meet some of the cast." So I did. And guess who I happened to see! I got to meet Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam (all regulars on SNL) and Karmin, the musical guest, who ended up being really great, in case you were curious. And then, here's the kicker... I SAW/MET/ALMOST GOT A PICTURE WITH STEVEN SPEILBERG. It was the biggest OMG moment of my life. He passed right in front of me while he was getting in the elevator before the show, and I was shaking with excitement. And then afterwards, he was walking out so nonchalantly like, "Oh, I'm Steven Speilberg, no big deal." But really, it was a huge deal! So, as we were walking out, we were walking with Steven (because we're on a first name basis now), and a couple people got pictures with him. Sadly, I was not one of the lucky few. But, I did capture an awkward "stalker" photo of him getting into his car. It was grand. I am still in awe and shock that I said hi to Steven Speilberg and he waved and said hi right back. *dreamy sigh*

The awe-inspiring Seth Meyers and me inside NBC
I need to get an in with him--he's like the head writer at SNL
Steven Speilberg getting into his car. He turned away right at the last second, so his face isn't clear, but GAHHHH. <3
Fred Armisen and me outside of NBC (IDOLIZE HIM)
Bobby Moynihan and me outside of NBC
Taran Killam and me outside of NBC (biggest little girl crush on him from my childhood)
Karmin and me outside of NBC (he is SO cute and she is just precious!)
I'd say overall it was an extremely successful night. I had so much fun and I really don't think anything will be able to top this one for a while.

I am so glad that I am living somewhere where opportunities like this are so easy to come by. I mean, what's a measly 15 hour wait in line overnight when you get a night full of laughs and memories like that to remember for a lifetime?

Anyway, aside from that, I don't think there's much else to tell. And even if there was, I am neither prepared or interested in saying more than I already have. Life is great. Classes are good. I am truly, truly happy. And that's all that really matters, right?

Until next time, guise! Buenas noches, sugar plums!

Live from New York... It's Saturday Night!

Woah, time has just been flying so quickly! It seems like just yesterday I was back in Nevada, but at the same time, I feel like I've lived here my whole life! Such a weird feeling!

Anyway, let's get this post underway! Money is becoming less stressful... and for that I am so thankful! Classes are SUPER great! I'm getting ready to turn in my first film for my Frame and Sequence class on Wednesday and my nerves look like this ------> fjdskakl;dajsf iopadjsfoidsjfjdsafj ldaksjflkadsjflkjL:! :P I'm not worried, though. I'm really excited to present it, actually! Frame and Sequence is so great! Favorite class perhaps? (:

The weather has been crazy recently! Last Saturday it SNOWED. Except it wasn't great snow. It was like sleet/slush and was sort of miserable without snow boots. But, luckily I bought a nice, down coat for winter earlier that week and was able to keep warm! And then, I decided snow boots would be a good idea, so I bought some of those later that day. After that, though, the weather toned down. It has been fluctuating back and forth between the 40s and 50s lately, so it's chilly, but still nice and sunny, too! The best of both worlds in my opinion!

My friend Max and I trapped in the crazy day of sleet!

I now own snow boots!

Let's see... Aside from that, I've just been trying to have fun lately. I'm not ignoring my work or anything, but I've been having more fun in the free time that I can scrounge up. In fact, I even dressed up for Halloween! Last minute, of course, I decided to be Smurfette. I donned my blue leggings and matching sweatshirt; white shorts with matching hat; tan ugg boots; and fun blue eyeshadow on my eyes, cheeks, and lips and went out with some friends! There is a huge parade that goes up 6th Ave on Halloween night, so we went to that (CRAZINESS UP THE WAZOO, BY THE WAY!) Needless to say, in the very little free time I have, I've been making my attempt to enjoy the city.

My entire costume!

Close up of my makeup!

My friend Ryan and I representing the 702 area here in the NYC!

With that being said, I am no longer an SNL virgin! On Friday night/Saturday morning, I waited for fourteen hours in line (5 pm-7am) for Saturday Night Live stand-by tickets. Let me just say, the cold was nearing unbearable! It was windy and cold, so when Mother Nature decided to make it 38 degrees, it felt like 30 degrees. Outside. New York City street. Cold. Long hours. It was definitely an experience, that's for SURE.
All cute BEFORE waiting outside.

Cuteness gone while waiting. ):

But, it was worth it, because after a LONG night, I got ticket number 46 for the live taping that night!

The catch, however, is that getting a ticket does not guarantee you a spot in the audience. Since they are stand-by tickets, they let people in based on the amount of people with regular tickets (which are almost impossible to get) that show up. So basically they have you line up in numerical order at 10:45 for the 11:30 taping of the show. They then let you in based on the amount of available seats they have. THE MOST STRESSFUL THING EVER.
So, I got there around 10:20 to get my place as number 46 in line. Not everyone was there in front of me, so I thought I'd have a good chance of getting in! Slowly, though, it started filling in more. After about 15 minutes, they let the first 30 people through security and upstairs. With those people gone, I was now fourth from the front of the line. They then slowly let people in with tickets above #30 as they showed up (since it was before 10:45). My chances of getting in were smaller and smaller, but I still felt hope. Eventually, I ended up 8th from the front of the line when they let 9 people through security! SUCCESS–I was through!
But lo and behold, getting past security did not mean that you got in! So there we are, 16 of us, in front of the elevators, waiting for the okay to go upstairs. They then announced that 12 people could go up, leaving 2 people in front of me, myself, and a person behind me still in front of the elevators. My chances were getting smaller and smaller. Then, they let in 2 people, leaving me and a line of about 8 people behind me that they just let in through security. You can imagine how I felt... the prospect of me getting in was really low, especially because they only let 2 people in before me.
My nerves were soon relieved, though. The woman came up, with a huge smile on her face and said, "The next four!" and called the elevator for us. From what I could tell, we were the last ones let into the studio. It was such a grueling and crazy process that after, I couldn't contain my smile!
So, as we walked into the studio, Jason Sudeikis was talking to the audience and soon after, the show was starting! Charlie Day from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was the host and let me say, he is even more fantastic in person. He's adorable, funny, and from what I could tell, he has an overall great personality! Being able to experience the SNL cast was such a treasured moment for me! I worship them so much and want to work on that show one day, so you can imagine my excitement. I mean Saturday Night Live is just a great show in general, too. The sketches were spot on and I just basked in the glory emanating from the cast. Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson. SO GREAT. I do wish Andy Samberg would have been used a bit more, but aside from that... I was in LOVE. fjdsal;fjld;ksajflk;adjsfkljadslkfj.

All dressed up for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE! I went all out with my Mexican dress, purple undershirt, purple tights, black boots, purple scarf, gray hat, black cardigan, and black coat. (:

Wow, okay, that was a super long explanation.. it is clear that was the highlight of my life! So that's what has happened since you last heard from me! I've been having a great time and I love it here! The holidays are coming up, though. So we'll see how much I love being away from what I'm used to on Thanksgiving. And then from there, it's only a short way away from winter break!

I'd LOVE to hear from some of you, so please send letters! I love getting snail mail! It's so much fun! And I promise to write back! I've even got stamps! (; I'll give my address again... in case ya'll have forgotten!

Money, Money, Money

You know that song by Abba? Money, money, money! Must be funny! In a rich man's world. Well, let me tell you, for someone attending one of the most EXPENSIVE universities in the country (and quite possibly, world), I am not living a rich man's life! Money, money, money. It's so NOT funny, in my college world.

As you all know, money is stressful. However, I never realized how much of a difficult task it is to manage money! People are always inviting me to go shopping or go out for yogurt or eat food not from the dining halls. The urge to say yes is so hard to fight! But I have been able to control that urge.. for the most part.

I'm sure this is surprising and impressive to most of you! Except to you, Mom, because you know that I spent quite a bit of money this last week. To be fair, though, it was all essentials! Let me just clear this up for all of you... my tuition, room, and board is approximately $63,000 a year. On top of that, I have to pay $115 for insurance (just in case I damage equipment rented from Tisch) AND buy two hard drives (that generally are impossible to find for less than $150) for editing. I just did both of those things within the last week. Plus, got some sweaters because it's getting CHILLY! So, I guess you can say my life is just expensive.

Man, it's so stressful sometimes. HOWEVER! I am trying to compensate for my expensive existence. I babysit for Patrick and Hiro. AND I am now running a business (of sorts) selling hats and scarves to cold people that I know! (: I'm working on flyers to put up soon! (Once midterms pass!) So, I guess things aren't that bad monetary-wise. I mean, hey, it's not like I'm broke! Just cheap! (;

I guess college is forcing me to be frugal and conservative. And I guess I should have no qualms about that.

I'm sure I'll find another thing to complain/brag about soon! So, until then!

(This is me in my "it's getting cold!" attire. I'm trudging through, guise.)

Hasta la pasta, sugarplums! (:

Classes and Floormates and Speech. Oh My!

Okay, so let's get down to business. (Before I continue, I'm going to go off on a tangent. That sentence reminded me of Mulan. Which reminded me that my floor definitely had a disney song singing night in the hallway last weekend. Man, we're so cool.) I realize I haven't updated in a while, but business has struck and my free time is slowly disintegrating. Anyway, I am approaching my fourth week of school, but honestly, it feels like I've been here forever. My classes are great! I love them! I mean, some are not as great as others, but I definitely enjoy being here and learning about film!

I'm taking a class called Digital Frame & Sequence and the basis of that class is still photography. So right now, we're just familiarizing ourselves with the camera, and doing exercises to help us, but soon we're going to start learning about editing on photoshop and final cut. And that will lead to our movie making! Even though we can't use motion film, we are using other techniques to make the photography work as a movie. I'm really excited! Here are a couple photos that I have used in class. My professor, Andy, thinks that I have a very 'experimental eye,' which makes me really happy!

I'm also taking the stupidest class ever. It's called Writing the Essay. Let me tell you a little about this class. NYU created it for its students. It does not exist anywhere else. The books required for this class all "welcome" NYU Class of 2015 students and congratulate them on their acceptance. I think that's pushing it a little if you ask me. Anyway, Writing the Essay is a class EVERYONE has to take at NYU. It fulfills the expository writing credits we need for our general ed. No AP tests or other college level writing classes will fulfill the credits. So, all freshman are placed in this class (death). Luckily, though, most students only have to take it one semester! Unluckily, I am not one of those students. Tisch students have to take it both fall and spring semester of freshman year. -_______- It's terrible. And don't get me wrong, I like writing. Actually, I love writing. However, the assignments we are required to do are just downright ridiculous! I spend every Monday and Wednesday (sometimes even more) down the hall in my friend's room attempting to "write the essay." See, we have the same crazy-lady teacher. So, it helps to work together. Literally, the BANE of my existence this year.

On a happier note: I started babysitting for Patrick and Hiromi last week! Erica is one of the most adorable babies ever! She is so smart and, when she is awake, very active! I am supposed to babysit her on Mondays because Hiro is taking a maternity yoga class! So far, I'm enjoying it! She naps most of the time, but I am supposed to wake her up before Hiro gets home, so I get to spend a little time with her! I was able to get a few snapshots of Erica when she woke up from her nap last week!

She is such a happy little girl! I've enjoyed the time I've spent with their little family–it's really nice to have family faces around!

Let's see, what else can I say? I received all of my yarn, so in the moments when I need to relax, I've got that right there for me! I signed up to get emails from the speech and debate club, because they offer DI, but I haven't heard back about the first meeting. So I'm hoping that they just haven't had it yet. I would REALLY love to continue DI. I miss it a lot. Hmmm, what else can I say? My roommates are still great. Definitely a good thing! My floormates are fantastic! We hang out all the time and go to floor dinners most nights. Like I said earlier, I spend most homework time in one of the rooms down the hall. I've never liked so many people in one concentrated area. This is a new thing for me. Granted, there are a couple people I am not TOO fond of, but what can you do?

I haven't done too much exploring recently. Sort of sad in a way, but with school comes the busy season! With that being said, I should actually probably go wash my sheets! Laundry day is always the best! Luckily I don't have class on Mondays, so I have all day to do "Sunday stuff" without the crowd of people in the laundry room/cleaning/etc.

I'll try and update more often! TTFN!

It's Been One Week! (Since you looked at me...)

Barenaked Ladies reference... Anyone? Okay, I guess not. Anyway! It's been one entire week in the dorm! It feels pretty great to be living here. I'm not sure that I quite feel like I live here though. I have yet to have that classic epiphany moment from a movie where the main character is walking down the street and has a revelation–in this case, living in New York City. However, I am enjoying myself immensely, if you couldn't tell from my last post. :P I am so excited to start classes tomorrow! Almost everyone I've met is really cool and the film kids are clearly awesome–like me. (;

Anyway, I'm actually adjusting to life "on my own" pretty well! I have hardly spent any money, which (as you all should know) is DIFFICULT for me. And I'm actually eating food. As in not junk that I bought at the store. Like, my meal plan! It's quite an accomplishment if I do say so myself. And just an fyi, the food here is actually pretty bomb!

But seriously, let's get down to what this post is really about. I have a feeling some of you are definitely dying to see what my dorm looks like! Well folks, the wait is over!

Here, you can see my bed. This is where I sleep. There's not much more to say other than that.

This 'K' collage is my pride and joy. No, I'm kidding. But seriously, it took around an hour to create and I'm immensely proud of it!

My desk! It looks really neat in this picture. And want to know a secret? It actually has STAYED neat! Mom and Dad, I know you're impressed with that news!

This is my closet! Each of us has our own closet, which I am pleased about! It is probably surprising to a lot of you how little clothing I have right now. I don't really know how I'm surviving, but it's actually not that bad!

Shoes! Woooooooooo! They've actually been staying neat too! I'm kind of on a roll.

Our adorable dressers. And microwave. And fridge. And tv. And food stash. And recycling bin. THEY RECYCLE IN NEW YORK. It's very weird. Luckily my roommates are from Jersey and California, so they're keeping me on track! :P

Oh, hey, we've got a pretty cool view, too. My bed doesn't sit by the window like the other two, but I still see this lovely view every day!

And just to make you all more jealous... a close up!

Okay, that's all I have for tonight, folks! I feel like I've been saying folks a lot... Oh well. Anyway, I left my laundry drying downstairs, and it will be done in about 10 minutes, so I should probably head down there, so I don't have to sift through piles of clothes that finished drying and were discarded on the floor by fellow hall members. That has already happened to a guy on my floor today, but to be fair, he was late for his laundry. All's fair when you leave your laundry sitting in a dryer. Oh, the joys of college laundry systems. Anyway, I feel like I just spent way too long talking about my laundry!

I'll update after my first week of classes. Maybe sooner if something GREAT happens! Which, I'm sure is very possible!

Talk to you all soon! <3

ALSO! If you ever want to send me a care package or a cute letter through snail mail, please do NOT hesitate!

It's a Quickie!

Okay, I'm just going to write a little bit, because I haven't taken any pictures of anything yet, and I'd like my first real post to have awesome visuals.

Anyway, I first want to start off by saying I am SAFE. The "hurricane" was nothing to worry about and everything was fine. The only effect it had on me was delaying my move in day to the 29th (as opposed to the 28th). With that being said, I am officially moved in to my dorm, Brittany Hall! My room is actually pretty large and has a good view! The only drawback to Brittany is that we don't have a dining hall in the building, so in order to use my meal plan, I have to be at another location on campus that accepts meal plans. Which, in reality, isn't too bad. Especially when I'll be out and about on campus most days, anyway. Except during winter when I don't have class. I'll just have to cross that bridge when I come to it. Okay, so back to my room. I share a room with two other girls, Francesca and Micaela. They are very chill and we get along well! Basically, for the last few days I have just been setting up my room, organizing everything, and hanging out with them. I've had a few sessions of orientation and have been able to explore quite a bit, which is exciting! Things are definitely falling together nicely so far! And I am happy to report that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE NEW YORK CITY! More specifically, The Village. (:

However, aside from the hustle and bustle of getting settled, there is really nothing to say. I mean, I've discovered a few places, seen a few sights, and eaten some food. But nothing too much has happened yet. So, I suppose for now, I'll just let you all know that I'm safe. I love NYU. I love Tisch. I love my dorm. I love my roommates. I love New York. And I am so excited and happy to be here!

Until next time!

Journey to the Eye of the Storm

Well, to say the beginning of my trip to NYU started badly would be an extreme understatement. Everything that could POSSIBLY go wrong, has. Let's recap what has happened thus far.

  • Arrive at McCarran Airport at 5:30am for a 6:30am flight.
  • Lady checking bags takes over 30 minutes to check in 2 people. There are still 2 people in front of us.
  • Finally, at approximately 6am, our bags are checked and we are on the way to security check.
  • After about 5 minutes in line, they request to check my carry on, delaying us another 10 minutes.
  • We managed to board with literally no time to spare, when we find out our flight isn't leaving until about 7:20, anyway.
  • We arrive in Phoenix at 8:05, for a connecting flight scheduled at 8:45, only to find out that we are delayed approximately 2 hours.
  • Now, it is 10:34 and we have yet to board due to Hurricane Irene rearing her ugly head.
  • We are slated to leave at 12:02. -____-
There is a chance our flight will be canceled, but as of right now, we are just delayed.

You know, I didn't anticipate this. Now, we won't arrive in New York until late tonight, if that. Also, we will miss seeing Rent. Today just hasn't been my day. But, you know, I'm making the best of it. I'm taking this opportunity to tell all of you of my first "adventure"!

Hopefully our flight boards soon and things get straightened out! I'm staying optimistic, even though there is no hope for the storm to get better soon. All I know, is if I can get through this and move in day during a hurricane, conquering snow and freshman year will be a breeze! ;D

Hasta la pasta, for now!
